Urban Quality: Density, Diversity, and Sustainability

Prof Dr Marc Angélil, Head of the Academic Committee of the LafargeHolcim Foundation delivered a keynote address at the Urban Quality: Density, Diversity, and Sustainability conference in Nanjing, China. The lecture “Terra: Project Earth” examined the effects of urbanization at the global scale. Earth itself can be conceptualized as an unsustainable city – highlighting the urgent need for action.

The conference was organized by the Urban Design Committee of the Jiangsu Civil Engineering & Architecture Society (JCEAS), the School of Architecture & Urban Planning of Nanjing University (SAUPNJU), the Architectural Design Institute of Nanjing University (ADINJU), and the Future City & Human Settlements in Natural Resources Research Institute at Nanjing University. More than 250 students, academics, practitioners and state officials attended the conference.

Marc Angélil explored the theme of Urban Quality, from the perspective of his publications Mirroring Effects: Tales of Territory and Terrestrial Tales: 100+ Takes on Earth (co-written with Cary Siress, who also attended the conference).

Marc Angélil also foregrounded the crucial role of the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction in promoting more viable practices for creating the urban environment, particularly through the LafargeHolcim Awards. The competition is currently open for entries until February 25, 2020 – and is the world’s most significant for sustainable design:
