Rolf Soiron is Chairman of the Board of the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.
He is a Member of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Chairman of the Board of Lonza Group.
He has been Chairman of the Board of the LafargeHolcim Foundation since the inception of the Advisory Board of the then Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction in 2004.
He studied history at the University of Basel, Switzerland, where he obtained a PhD in philosophy in 1972. He also holds a post masters degree from the Harvard Business School which he obtained in 1980.
He began his professional career in Switzerland in 1970 with the Sandoz Group, where he held various positions, ultimately as CEO of Sandoz Pharma with the responsibility for the global pharmaceuticals business. He managed the Jungbunzlauer group (1993-2003), ultimately as managing director, and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nobel Biocare (2003-10).
Rolf Soiron became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lonza Group, a Basel-based multinational chemicals and biotechnology company, in April 2005.
He was appointed to the Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the supreme governing body of the Organization in 2009.
In the same year, he was elected President of Avenir Suisse, an independent think tank promoting the social and economic development of Switzerland. He is also a member of the Foundation Board for the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
In April 2014, Rolf Soiron stepped down from the Board of Directors of Holcim after being Chairman for eleven years and a member of the Board of Directors for 20 years. He held the part-time role of President of the Basel University Council (1996-2005). Founded in 1459, Basel University is Switzerland’s oldest university.
He has moderated the Concluding Debate at all Forums: Zurich (2004), Shanghai (2007), Mexico City (2010), Mumbai (2013), and Detroit (2016) as well as the Concluding Panel “Sustainability vs Security” at the 15th International Architectural Biennale in November, 2016.
Rolf Soiron was a member of the Global Holcim Awards jury in 2009, 2012 and 2015, and will be a member of the Global LafargeHolcim Awards jury in 2018.
