Karen Scrivener

About

Karen Scrivener is Professor and Head of Laboratory of Construction Materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The work of the laboratory is focussed on improving the sustainability of cementitious building materials.

Karen Scrivener graduated from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in Materials Science (1979) and then completed a PhD on The Microstructural Development during the Hydration of Portland Cement at Imperial College in London, remaining there until 1995 as Royal Society Research Fellow and then lecturer.

She joined the Central Research Laboratories of Lafarge near Lyon in France in 1995, and was appointed as Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Construction Materials, Department of Materials at EPFL in 2001.

She is the founder and co-ordinator of Nanocem, a Network of industry and academia for fundamental research on cementitious materials and Editor in Chief of Cement and Concrete Research, the leading academic journal in the field.

She was a participant in the 3rd LafargeHolcim Roundtable held at the Institute for Lightweight Structures & Conceptual Design (ILEK), University of Stuttgart, Germany (2018).

Karen Scrivener was a member of the LafargeHolcim Awards jury for region Europe in 2017. She will be a workshop moderator for Catch 22: Material needs versus material impact at the 6th International LafargeHolcim Forum for Sustainable Construction to be held in Cairo, Egypt in April 2019.
