Jeannette Kuo

About

Jeannette Kuo is Founding Partner of Karamuk Kuo Architects based in Zurich, Switzerland.

She is also Assistant Professor in Practice at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) (2016-).

Established in 2010, Karamuk Kuo Architects focuses on the intersection of spatial concepts with constructive technologies to approach architecture from its basis as a physical discipline.

Karamuk Kuo Architects works on projects at a range of scales, from spatial installations and exhibitions to complex cultural projects. The office’s works include the International Sports Sciences Institute at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and the Augusta Raurica Archaeological Center in Kaiser Augst, Switzerland, for which they won a LafargeHolcim Acknowledgement prize (2017).

The office was nominated for the Iakov Chernikhov Prize 2014, recognizing promising young architects. Jeannette Kuo received a P/A Award for her research (Infra)Structural Opportunism (2006), Julia Amory Appleton Traveling Fellowship, Peter Rice Prize in Structural Innovation, Gerald M McCue MBT Scholarship, and William Stout Prize in Architectural History.

She received the competitive Maybeck Teaching Fellowship at the University of California (UC) Berkeley (2006) and has subsequently taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2011-14) and held a visiting professorship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL Lausanne).

She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from UC Berkeley, a Master of Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard GSD, and a Master of Advanced Studies from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich).

She edited A-Typical Plan: Projects and Essays on Identity, Flexibility and Atmosphere in the Office Building (Park Books, 2013), which received the Most Beautiful Swiss Book Award (2013).

Jeannette Kuo will be Head of the LafargeHolcim Awards jury for region Europe in 2020.
