Holger Wallbaum


Holger Wallbaum is Professor in Sustainable Building at the Division of Building Technology, Research Group Sustainable Building, and in the Area of Advanced Built Environment at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He works within sustainable building on concepts, tools and strategies to enhance the sustainability performance of construction materials, building products, buildings as well as entire cities.

His main research interests are related to ecological and economic life cycle assessment of construction materials, buildings and infrastructures, sustainability assessment tools for buildings, social-cultural and climate adapted design concepts, the refurbishment of the building stock as well as dynamic building stock modeling and its visualization.

Holger Wallbaum was appointed to the Governing Board of Climate-KIC, one of three Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) created in 2010 by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The EIT is a European Union (EU) body whose mission is to create sustainable growth. Climate-KIC supports this mission by addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation.

He was formerly the Chair for Sustainable Construction, initiated by Holcim at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland. He was appointed to this position, as Assistant Professor for Sustainable Construction, from August 2006 until August 2012. He was also a member of the former Technical Competence Center (TCC), now Academic Committee (AC), of the Holcim Foundation from August 2006 until May 2013.He was appointed to his present position at Chalmers University of Technology in August 2012.

Holger Wallbaum studied safety engineering and environmental management at the University of Wuppertal, Germany; safety engineering and risk management at the University of Mulhouse, France; and completed a PhD in architecture at the University of Hannover, Germany in 2002. He gained professional experience in the fields of sustainability indicator systems and management tools for decision support and communication.

He is a member of diverse international boards and has been an advisor at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment & Energy (1995-2002); a co-founder and managing partner of triple innova, Germany, which specializes in corporate social responsibility and sustainability reporting (2002-2013). He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Sustainable Cities and Societies, and subject-editor for “Buildings and Building Materials” of the International Journal for Life Cycle Assessment. Since 2013 he became a core member of the Sustainable City Systems platform of the Climate-KIC on behalf of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) in Budapest, Hungary.

He moderated the workshop Stimulate stakeholders – With incentives to implementation at the 3rd International Holcim Forum 2010 in Mexico City and led the workshop Overall value: Harnessing all benefits from sustainable construction at the 4th International Holcim Forum 2013 in Mumbai.

Holger Wallbaum was a member of the Holcim Awards jury for region Africa Middle East in 2008 and 2011, and the Holcim Awards jury for region Europe in 2014.
