Elmar Ledergerber was Mayor of the City of Zurich, Switzerland (2002-09).
He was Zurich city council member responsible for the city’s building construction department (1998-2002), and a member of the Swiss National Council, the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament (1987-98).
Before entering politics he worked as a consultant for 27 years in the energy and environment fields.
He studied history and social science at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and international economics of developing countries at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
He was a partner at INFRAS, Zurich (1977-94), a consulting company for infrastructure, environmental and economic issues, and managed his own company, Econcept, economic and political consultants for business, ecology and infrastructure development (1994-98).
He has been involved in development projects in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bhutan, Madagascar and Nepal. He is President of the Swiss development organization, Intercorporation.
