About

El Hadi Jazairy is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning, University of Michigan, based in Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

He is a licensed architect and a founding partner of Design Earth, a research-based practice engaged in the relationships between design and geography.

His research addresses the agency of design in re-qualifying the urban question at a territorial scale. At the intersection of mapping, technology and politics, he investigates in particular spaces of exception –such as camps, campuses, free zones, and city-states – as significant forms of contemporary urbanization.

He is co-author of Geographies of Trash (Actar, 2015), reclaiming the role of forms, technologies, economies and logistics of the waste system disposal in the production of new aesthetics and politics of urbanism.

El Hadi Jazairy holds a Doctorate of Design from Harvard University, a Master of Architecture from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Architecture from La Cambre in Brussels, Belgium.

Prior to his appointment at Michigan University, he was a Lecturer in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Postdoctoral Fellow in Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University. He is a founding editor of the journal New Geographies, which focuses on contemporary issues of large-scale environments and editor-in-chief of NG4: Scales of the Earth.

His professional practice has received the Europan 6 award and the Regle d’Or de l’Urbanisme. His recent writings have been published in the Journal of Cultural Geography, MONU, San Rocco, and the Journal of Architectural Education.

El Hadi Jazairy was a workshop expert on the Trans-Arabian Pipeline in the Middle East at the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction dedicated to “Infrastructure Space” held April 7-9, 2016 in Detroit, USA.
