Anuradha Mathur is a Professor in the Landscape Architecture Department, School of Design (PennDesign) at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
She is an architect and landscape architect, and in collaboration with her partner, Dilip da Cunha, has focused her artistic and design expertise on cultural and ecological issues of contentious landscapes. Their investigations have taken them to diverse terrains, including the Lower Mississippi, New York, Bengaluru/Bangalore, Mumbai, Jerusalem, Varanasi, the Himalayas, the Sundarbans, and most recently the Western Ghats of India.
An underlying thread in Anuradha Mathur’s work is a concern for how water is visualized and engaged in ways that lead to conditions of its excess and scarcity, but also the opportunities that its fluidity offers for new visualizations of terrain, design imagination, and design practice.
She holds a BArch from the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad (1986) and an MLA from the University of Pennsylvania (1991).
She is author with Dilip da Cunha of Mississippi Floods: Designing a Shifting Landscape (Yale UP, 2001); Deccan Traverses: The Making of Bangalore's Terrain (Rupa, 2006); Soak: Mumbai in an Estuary (National Gallery of Modern Art/Rupa, 2009); and Design in the Terrain of Water (Applied Research & Design Publishing, 2014).
She conceived and curated an international symposium titled In the Terrain of Water, held at PennDesign in 2011 and 2012.
She was invited to lead a PennDesign team with Dilip da Cunha for Structures of Coastal Resilience, a project funded by the Rockefeller Foundation in 2013-14. Their team’s focus was Norfolk and the Hampton Roads area of coastal Virginia where they are in dialog with local agencies, institutions, and the US Army Corps of Engineers on the future of coastal infrastructure and settlement in the face of sea level rise.
Anuradha Mathur was a workshop expert on Estuary Infrastructure at the 5th International Forum for Sustainable Construction dedicated to “Infrastructure Space” held April 7-9, 2016 in Detroit, USA.
