Andreas Ruby

About

Andreas Ruby is Director of the Swiss Architecture Museum (S AM) in Basel, Switzerland.

The S AM is the leading institution in the mediation of contemporary architecture in Switzerland. It invigorates and shapes Switzerland's architectural discourse with its programme, and seeks to bridge the gap between professional discourse and the wider public.

Andreas Ruby is also Principal of Textbild in Berlin and a Visiting Professor for Architectural Theory & Design at the University of Kassel, Germany. He is a critic and curator in the fields of architecture, design and the visual arts.

He founded Textbild, an agency of architectural communication, Ilka Ruby in 2001. Predominantly committed to contemporary architecture and design, the agency writes essays, designs books, and organizes symposia for a wide array of institutional and cultural clients. Together, they also founded the German architecture debate platform, www.bkult.de.

Andreas & Ilka Ruby have curated exhibitions including at the German Architecture Museum, Frankfurt; German Architecture Center (DAZ) and gallery Aedes, Berlin; and the House of Architecture (HDA), Graz, Austria. They have organised several international symposia and exhibitions on architecture and design, such as the “Min to Max” symposium on affordable housing and the ravelling exhibition (Druot, Lacation & Vassal – Tour Bois le Prêtre”.

His publications include Urban transformation (Ruby Press, 2008); Of people and houses: architecture from Styria (HDA, 2008/09); EM2N: both and (GTA, 2009); Re-inventing construction (Ruby Press, 2010); Sadar + Vuga: a review (Hatje Cantz, 2012); MRDV buildings (nai010, 2013); and Infrastructure space (Ruby Press, 2016).

Andreas Ruby studied art history at the University of Cologne, Germany before undertaking post-graduate studies on the theory and history of architecture at the Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture Paris with Paul Virilio and at Columbia University with Bernard Tschumi.

He writes essays, reviews and articles for architectural magazines including Daidalos (Germany/US), Bauwelt (Germany), Assemblage (US), Archis (Netherlands) and Werk, bauen + Wohnen (Switzerland). He has moderated numerous symposiums and roundtable discussions at events including Archilab in Orleans, France and the Graz biennial on media and architecture, Austria.
