The Global Ideas prize was handed-over to project authors Juan Cruz Serafini and Tomás Pont at an event organized by Holcim Argentina to coincide with a national trade fair in Córdoba. Their project with Stefano Romagnoli addresss the potential ramifications of human-induced climate change on the natural environment, the authors propose an infrastructure for the use of tidal energy in Río Gallegos estuary at Punta Loyola in Argentina.

Princeton University student Georgian Baronian is examining how large-scale structures can benefit from using water on the roof as a thermal insulator and solar reflector. She was presented with her Global LafargeHolcim Awards Ideas prize by Roland Köhler, Chairman of the Board of the LafargeHolcim Foundation and Maria Atkinson, founding CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia, and member of the Board of the LafargeHolcim Foundation.

Sim Choon Heok and Richard Hassallof WOHA received a Global Finalist 2018 certificate for “Floating University”, on behalf of Mun Summ Wong, main author of the project. The 2017 Awards winning design for BRAC University’s new campus in Dhaka, Bangladesh, remediates a neglected area that has become a heavily polluted sewage dump, and opens it back up to residents of the city.

Sol Camacho, architect, urban planner and founding Director of RADDAR and Jonathan Franklin, Managing Partner of Exxpon receive a Global Finalist 2018 certificate for “Community Capital” in Brazil. Their project aims to contribute to a lasting improvement in the Paraisópolis favela with a neighborhood center including a dance school, auditorium, and more funded by “patient capital” rental of commercial spaces.

Project architect Daliana Suryawinata, SHAU received a Global Finalist 2018 certificate for “Microlibrary”. The 2017 Awards winning design for a network of small learning centers aims to raise literacy by offering attractive spaces for reading. Basic construction methods are easily achievable in the local context that also enhances performance through building materials selection and eco-friendly designs.
