“Permanent Skeleton” by reinforced concrete with “Environmental Void” was constructed as the first step. This strong skeleton ensures minimum living environment such as daylight or ventilation. In the next step, “Flexible Skin” by local wood structure would be constructed without decreasing the beneficial effect of the “Environmental Void” and creates a familiar elevation for the community. Then, the environmental improvement will be realized while still preserving the current intimate atmosphere of the slum area.

The proposal is a post-earthquake reconstruction plan for Xueshan village, a historic village known as the hometown of the panda. The severe disaster resulted in great damage to the village where people endure a poor living environment. However, compared to Baoxing county located on the opposite side of the river, Xueshan village retains a primitive simplicity. All the historical heritage is connected by a route through the village.

The concrete structure utilizes vernacular building techniques and standardized formwork to create a seismically stable shape. This construction translates into an investment in local craft and workmanship. In contrast to local concrete buildings, which are normally finished in stucco, the orphanage’s exposed concrete accentuates and expresses the vernacular. The brise-soleil provides an armature to negotiate interior and exterior through gardens, circulation and social spaces. (Image by Sagar Chitraka)

The vertical garden and permaculture is a critical component of the sustainability strategy. Vegetation is integrated into the exterior structure and circulation. The vertical structure processes waste, provides food, shades the building, purifies the air with ferns, and creates a lush outdoor environment throughout the building. Whereas this kind of interweaving of daily life with agriculture has often been proposed as a symbolic image of optimism, here it is a necessity.

3D view of the proposed library: The single-story building mass spans nonchalantly across the landscape, touching the earth as lightly as possible. The building informally wraps around an internal courtyard that is also an extension of the external landscape. The placement of the building on site retains all existing trees, while its linear footprint allows optimized natural ventilation and brings in sunlight to all internal rooms; rammed earth walls provide thermal mass.

The slip-form, rammed earth wall construction process is projected as an opportunity to transfer technology to locals and former soldiers. The subsequent training tasks are planned at an early design stage called “fabrication and training design”. Here, various components of the system and moldwork are delineated, the fabrication/training tolerances are defined, the production site (training ground), minimum module and sample labor gang (for training) are established, and fabrication steps are laid out.

Material system: structure and performance. Palm branches have an ideal ”spoon” shape which enables a sea current to slow down and deposit sand material in the concave area of the unit. In this way mounds of sand deposit are created, which gradually create a higher coastline. During the process, the palm branch transforms to “geoarmature”, which is able to host aquatic plants, like mangroves.
