Organic Fiber Cultivation: The mill is designed as a series of courtyards and squares which are shaped along a public route running between Marabastad and the river. Movement along the building’s edges is layered according to these changing contextual conditions, and exposes industrial processes to the public. Bast-fiber fields which surround the mill extend and regenerate natural habitat instead of reducing it, re-define industrial agriculture for the 21st century.

Algae-based dye cultivation: By housing a living organism as part of the architectural skin, the mill’s spatial experience is in constant flux, and is directly connected to the natural metabolism of the algae and movement of water. As the varicolored algae species are grown, sunlight is filtered through the glass tanks to create organic ‘stained glass’ dappled light inside the building. The building’s façade also morphs as the algae is grown and harvested for dye and energy.

Project entry 2014 Africa Middle East - Weaving Publicness: Socially-integrated office building with sustainable façade, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Inspired by podium and tower: the podium slopes down toward the surrounding urban space, and creates three urban square typologies. The inner circulation of the building is conceived as a street, which circles out to the sequence of urban squares, generating a “public-ness” in its circulation so typical for Ethiopian streets. At the same time, access is conceived in such a way that multi-tenant scenarios are easily implementable.

The Beirut Pine Forest is adjacent to densely-populated areas where green spaces are practically nonexistent. The Beirut Hippodrome and the Beirut Pine Forest are separated by a vehicular road, but future implementations will be applied to ensure they are reconnected. Minimum intervention is applied, and the design maintains existing features by dividing the area into three zones that were already defined by three existing axes that lead to a central meeting point.

The Lebanese coast is an urban concrete jungle with very limited green spaces and few public parks that cater for the wellbeing of the urban dwellers. The Beirut Pine Forest is centrally located in the city and can be easily accessible through main roads. It is surrounded by different functions such as residential, office, educational, cultural, and religious precincts. Softscape, an urban project starting from Downtown Beirut will have the Beirut Pine Forest as its final stop.

The SICU prototype is a compact double-story unit comprised of a prefabricated concrete lower structure and lightweight eucalyptus frames for the upper floor. After all parts have been prefabricated, the building was constructed in ten days by 35 students from three countries and now stands erect in a typical neighborhood of Addis Ababa, serving to demonstrate an alternative housing approach and to prompt further discussions between policy makers, industry and academia.

Project entry 2014 Africa Middle East - Incremental Construction: Low-cost modular housing scheme, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The project is situated in an area earmarked for total renewal in a typical neighborhood of Addis Ababa, one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa. New constructions in the city predominantly use concrete frame and cast in-situ construction; and the city has banned natural materials from being used in buildings since 2009, limiting the solutions available for house construction. It aimed to investigate possibilities for an alternative urban housing unit in this context.

Project entry 2014 Africa Middle East - Bio-Mimicry: Water research center, Fika Patso Dam, South Africa
The Water Research Centre not only addresses the issue of water research but also how architecture reacts to its surrounding context and the effect that it has on how the building operates and functions. The architecture is activated by the environment’s transformation from one season to the other. The water is the lifeline of the building, it not only supplies water to the building but the architecture in return purifies, creates habitats for fish and birds, it lives in symbiosis with nature.

Project entry 2014 Africa Middle East - Bio-Mimicry: Water research center, Fika Patso Dam, South Africa
This project explores whether nature and architecture can amalgamate to become a hybrid solution in a vast landscape which has lost its reference to place and time. The transformation of place and time through architecture results in a progressive fusion giving meaning to a certain non-place lacking character and spatial qualities and resulting in an awakened space. This led to the idea of spatial reawakening through the medium of architecture.
