The American University of Beirut (AUB) (الجامعة الأميركية في بيروت) is a private, secular, and independent university in Beirut, Lebanon.
The university is ranked as the number one university in Lebanon and among the top 250 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings. AUB is also ranked as the first American university located outside of the United States.
The AUB reintroduced PhD programs in 2007 and offers six doctoral programs: Arab & Middle Eastern History, Arabic Language & Literature, Cell & Molecular Biology, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Environmental & Water Resources Engineering, Mechanical Engineering & Theoretical Physics. The university offers more than 120 programs leading to the bachelor’s, master’s, MD, and PhD degrees.
AUB has more than 6,000 undergraduate students and more than 1,500 graduate students. At the end of June 2011, the number of degrees and diplomas awarded since June 1870 totaled 82,032.
