Sarah Nichols is PhD candidate at the Institute for History & Theory of Architecture (gta) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Switzerland.

She teaches design and urban research in architecture. Her current research “Rights, Freedom, Property, Movement” focuses on the ideological construction of Detroit’s spatial order.

She has worked independently under the name Specter since 2011 on architecture and urban design projects in Switzerland and the USA. Recent projects include a speculative hotel project in Ferndale, MI, USA, the Perpendicular House in Royal Oak, MI, USA and a commissioned test plan for the reorganization of a noise-intensive neighborhood near Zurich Airport, Switzerland. She is also a co-initiator of the temporary project space Die Weinhalde, curating quarterly calls for in-situ artists’ fellowships in a villa near Zurich.

She holds an Advanced Master of Architecture from the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, Netherlands and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michgan in Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

She was a participant/organizer at the 2nd Holcim Roundtable “Re-materializing construction”, held in Einsiedeln, Switzerland (2015).

As Academic Committee (AC) Scientific Coordinator of the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, she curated and organized four concurrent mobile workshops at the 5th International LafargeHolcim Forum for Sustainable Construction in Detroit, USA. The mobile workshops enabled participants to visit sites across the Detroit metropolitan region that intersected with the Forum's theme "Infrastructure Space" and grounded the Forum's global discussions with examples that were experienced and discussed in situ.
